Breathalizers reins in unlimited beer on job Hoje-Taastrup, Denmark Carlsberg A/S is utilising Alcolock breathalizers on forklifts and other equipment to monitor operators%u2019 previously unlimited beer consumption on the job.The brewing company created waves of dissent and an employee strike for imposing new work rules effective from 1 April at a distribution facility in Hoje-Taastrup.Managers restricted beer consumption for warehouse employees to lunch hours in the plant cafeteria, with a limit of three pint-sized cups. The imposition offended distribution centre workers who previously had open access to beer on the job and were given the discretion of drinking within reason.About 260 employees at the distribution facility went on strike and gained support through the walk-out of about 500 workers at a Carlsberg brewery in Fredericia, Denmark. The strike ended on 11 April, with Carlsberg management agreeing to move toward a temporary solution and a longer-term legal settlement. The United Federation of Danish Workers, known as the Fagligt Faelles Forbund or 3F union, represents the workers.Alcolock GB Ltd of St Ives, England produces the state-of-the-art ergonomically designed alcohol-activated breathalizer that is connected to a vehicle immobilizer via a wireless system.Copenhagen, Denmark-based Carlsberg was the world%u2019s fourth-largest brewery group in 2009. The publicly traded organisation employs about 45,000 staff.

1. Replace worn tires and wheels. Forklifts have almost no suspension. Worn or chunked tires cause excessive jarring and shaking of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems. Consider different tires that offer more shock absorption and wear life for load wheels and forklift tires.

CapacityForklift trucks are rated according to how much weight they can lift, starting at 3,000 lbs and going up to 35,000 lbs and more. 3,000-, 5,000-, and 8,000-lb models make up the bulk of the market. Want a quick, printable version of this guide highlighting our best tips? The size of your typical load will affect the capacity you need. Forklift capacity is usually based on a 24 inch "load center", meaning that the distance from the center of gravity to the sides of the load is 24". The easiest way to think about this is that a forklift can only lift its maximum weight if the load is a four-foot cube. If your loads are unusually long or high, the forklift won't be able to safely lift as much. Knowing the typical dimensions and weight of your loads will allow you to work with the salesperson to determine the exact capacity you need. Also consider how much variation there is in your loads. If you constantly produce identical pallets of products, you know exactly what capacity you need. However, in a more mixed environment, or one where the load size changes over time, you may want to buy a truck with more capacity than you need currently to make sure it gets the job done now and in the future. HeightA close second to "How much do you need to lift?" is "How high do you need to lift it?" If your primary use for the forklift is loading and unloading trucks, you may not need much height at all; if your warehouse has shelves 30' high, that is a pretty clear indicator of the reach your lift will need. Unlike load capacity, your height needs are unlikely to change over time barring new construction or major renovations. Buy for the height you need now. New vs. usedDeciding whether you will buy a new or used forklift truck is a good place to start narrowing your options. Here's a good rule of thumb: if you are going to be using your forklift more than 4 hours a day, you should invest in new equipment. Forklifts that are used more than 4 hours per day are major part of your operation. With this much use, the operating and maintenance costs for used equipment can quickly wipe out the initial savings you gained. If the lift truck will be used only a couple of hours per day, you can probably benefit from buying a used truck. When the dealer gets a used lift truck back at the end of a lease, they usually recondition it with a new paint job, new tires, a thorough engine tune-up, and any other mechanical repairs that need to be made, so you can feel reasonably confident in the condition of the truck. "As-is" trucks can save you even more money, but may have original paint, worn tires, and generally not be in the shape you would expect. Many dealers offer both new and used forklift trucks, so you can compare prices easily. Make

Counterbalanced forklift
Counterbalanced forklift components A typical counterbalanced forklift contains the following components:[9] Image of an electric forklift with component descriptions Truck Frame - is the base of the machine to which the mast, axles, wheels, counterweight, overhead guard and power source are attached. The frame may have fuel and hydraulic fluid tanks constructed as part of the frame assembly. Counterweight - is a heavy cast iron mass attached to the rear of the forklift truck frame. The purpose of the counterweight is to counterbalance the load being lifted. In an electric forklift the large lead-acid battery itself may serve as part of the counterweight. Cab - is the area that contains a seat for the operator along with the control pedals, steering wheel, levers, switches and a dashboard containing operator readouts. The cab area may be open air or enclosed, but it is covered by the cage-like overhead guard assembly. Overhead Guard - is a metal roof supported by posts at each corner of the cab that helps protect the operator from any falling objects. On some forklifts, the overhead guard is an integrated part of the frame assembly. Power Source - may consist of an internal combustion engine that can be powered by LP gas, CNG gas, gasoline or diesel fuel. Electric forklifts are powered by either a battery or fuel cells that provides power to the electric motors. The electric motors used on a forklift may be either DC or AC types. Tilt Cylinders - are hydraulic cylinders that are mounted to the truck frame and the mast. The tilt cylinders pivot the mast to assist in engaging a load. Mast - is the vertical assembly that does the work of raising and lowering the load. It is made up of interlocking rails that also provide lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have rollers or bushings as guides. The mast is either hydraulically operated by one or more hydraulic cylinders or it may be chain operated with a hydraulic motor providing motive power. It may be mounted to the front axle or the frame of the forklift. Carriage - is the component to which the forks or other attachments mount. It is mounted into and moves up and down the mast rails by means of chains or by being directly attached to the hydraulic cylinder. Like the mast, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails. Load Back Rest - is a rack-like extension that is either bolted or welded to the carriage in order to prevent the load from shifting backward when the carriage is lifted to full height. Attachments - may consist of forks or tines that are the L-shaped members that engage the load. A variety of other types of material handling attachments are available. Some attachments include sideshifters, slipsheet attachments, carton clamps, multipurpose clamps, rotators, fork positioners, carpet poles, pole handlers, container handlers and roll clamps. [edit] Attachments Below is a list of common forklift attachments:[10] Sideshifter - is a hydraulic attachment that allows the operator to move the tines (forks) and backrest laterally. This allows easier placement of a load without having to reposition the truck.[11] Rotator - To aid the handling of skids that may have become excessively tilted and other specialty material handling needs some forklifts are fitted with an attachment that allows the tines to be rotated. This type of attachment may also be used for dumping containers for quick unloading. Fork Positioner - is a hydraulic attachment that moves the tines (forks) together or apart. This removes the need for the operator to manually adjust the tines for different sized loads. Roll and Barrel Clamp Attachment - A mechanical or hydraulic attachment used to squeeze the item to be moved. It is used for handling barrels, kegs, or paper rolls. This type of attachment may also have a rotate function. The rotate function would help an operator to insert a vertically stored paper into the horizontal intake of a printing press for example. Pole Attachments - In some locations, such as carpet warehouses, a long metal pole is used instead of forks to lift carpet rolls. Similar devices, though much larger, are used to pick up metal coils. Carton and Multipurpose Clamp Attachments - are hydraulic attachments that allow the operator to open and close around a load, squeezing it to pick it up. Products like cartons, boxes and bales can be moved with this type attachment. With these attachments in use, the forklift truck is sometimes referred to as a clamp truck. Slip Sheet Attachment (Push - Pull) - is a hydraulic attachment that reaches forward, clamps onto a slip sheet and draws the slip sheet onto wide and thin metal forks for transport. The attachment will push the slip sheet and load off the forks for placement. Drum Handler Attachment - is a mechanical attachment that slides onto the tines (forks). It usually has a spring loaded jaw that grips the top lip edge of a drum for transport. Another type grabs around the drum in a manner similar to the roll or barrel attachments. Man Basket - a lift platform that slides onto the tines (forks) and is meant for hoisting workers. The man basket has railings to keep the person from falling and brackets for attaching a safety harness. Also, a stap or chain is used to attach the man basket to the carriage of the forklift. Telescopic Forks - are hydraulic attachments that allow the operator to operate in warehouse design for "double-deep stacking", which means that two pallet shelves are placed behind each other without any aisle between them. [edit]

Forklift Classifications
Forklift Classifications There are seven classes of forklift that describe the fuel option of the forklift and the use. Each forklift operator must be certified to use on each class of forklift that they will operate. Class 1 - Electric Motor Rider Trucks These forklifts can be equipped with either cushion or pneumatic tires. The cushion tired lift trucks are intended for indoor use on smooth floors. The pneumatic tired models can be used in dry outdoor applications. These vehicles are powered by industrial batteries and use transistor motor controllers to control travel and hoist functions. These are very versatile and are found from the loading dock to the storage facility. They are generally used in applications where air quality factors need to be considered. Class 2 - Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Trucks This forklift is for companies that opt for very narrow aisle operation. This allows them to maximize the use of storage space. These vehicles have been developed unique features that are designed to minimize the space occupied by the truck and to improve speed and efficiency. Class 3 - Electric Motor Hand or Hand-Rider Trucks These are hand controlled where the operator is in front of the truck and controls the lift truck through a steering tiller. All controls are mounted on the top of the tiller and the tiller is moved side to side to steer the truck. These vehicles are battery powered with the smaller capacity units using industrial batteries. Class 4 - Internal Combustion Engine Trucks - Cushion Tires These forklifts are used inside on smooth dry floors for transporting palletized loads to and from the loading dock and the storage area. The cushion tired forklifts are lower to the ground than pneumatic tired forklift truck. This allows cushion tired forklift trucks more useful in low clearance applications. Class 5 - Internal Combustion Engine Trucks - Pneumatic Tires These trucks are most commonly seen in warehouse. They can be used either inside or outside and used in virtually any type of application. Because of the large capacity range of this series of lift truck, they can be found handling small single pallet loads to loaded 40 foot containers. These lift trucks can be powered by internal combustion engines and are available for use with LPG, Gasoline, Diesel, and Compressed Natural Gas fuel systems. Class 6 - Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Tractors These vehicles are versatile and can be used in a variety of applications. They can be equipped with either internal combustion engines for outdoor use or battery powered electric motors for indoor use. Class 7 - Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks Rough terrain forklifts are fitted with large flotation type tires for outdoor use on difficult surfaces. They are often used at construction sites to transport and lift building materials to various job site locations. They are also common with lumber yards and auto recyclers.

11
solid tires
Should I use a solid tire or foam-fill tire? In some cases there is no solid tire made to take the place of a foam-fill tire. Foam-fill tires can be used with lock ring or drop center wheels while solid tires must have a flat based wheel to be pressed on. Always check ground conditions. Additional maintenance problems may occur with solids (e.g. motor mounts, steer axle) when deciding to use solid forklift tires.

12
Cushion trucks
I have a cushion truck. Can I use it outside? Cushion trucks are made for warehouse and driveway use only. If you use a cushion forklift on rocks, grass, and dirt, chances are likely that you will get stuck. The only option is to go wider on the front tire but the additional cost will not result in additional flotation. Can I put pneumatic tires on a cushion truck? There are very few models of cushion trucks that are able to be changed from press-on tire to pneumatic tire. If you can change to pneumatic, you have will an additional cost for new wheels.

13
cushion tire forklift
What is a cushion tire forklift? A cushion tire forklift uses a press-on tire that is made with a metal band and a rubber attached to it. A solid pneumatic forklift has tires that are shaped like air tires. When do I replace a cushion tire? Most cushion tires will have a safety bar on the sidewall to show when they will need replacing. A general rule of thumb for all others is to replace when the wear reaches the top of the imprint of the size of the tire. The reason being is that once the tread reaches that point, 50 percent of the carrying capacity is lost. For cushion trucks, the tire is the only shock absorber on the truck. For solid pneumatic tires, that is when all the tread is gone and the tires are completely smooth

14
forklift traction tire
Smooth tires give better traction on dry surfaces and can give you more rubber for the dollar spent. If you have moisture problems, the traction tire is the better fit. The front of the forklift (drive) does all the pulling and the back (steer) axle is nothing more than a free wheeling tire. The steer can use smooth or traction as it makes no difference.

15
non-marking forklift tires
What are non-marking forklift tires? Non-marking tires are made to eliminate black marks on the floors. Grocery or food processing plants are required to use them. The biggest disadvantage to non-marking tires is that the carbon black is removed which results in a shorter lifespan of the tire. The use of the non-marking tire in certain climates may require you to use an anti-static strip on the forklift as the tire is prone to cause static electricity. Non-marking tires are available in both solid, pneumatic, and cushion. The colors of the tires may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but most have gray, white, off-white, and black

forklift dealership
Komatsu unlikely to keep Tusk dealership sites Rolling Meadows, IL, United States Komatsu Forklift USA LLC core dealerships are unlikely at this time to add North American sites of the soon-to-be-discontinued Tusk brand There has been no discussion or intention conveyed to convert all Tusk dealers to Komatsu, says Keith Allmandinger, senior marketing manager. Each situation would be viewed on its own merits as we would view any other dealer applicant. In the western hemisphere, Komatsu Forklift100 distributors manage about 150 locations. Nine of those Komatsu-brand dealers also represent Tusk, which has 33 distributors with about 65 locations in the US, Canada and Mexico. Sales of Tusk-branded equipment will cease on 31 July.Allmandinger adds: If Komatsu Forklift has a need, or an open territory, the existing Tusk dealer could be considered to fill that need, if interested. For the most part, Komatsu already has representation in the markets served by existing Tusk dealers.Komatsu Forklift USA of Rolling Meadows is an affiliate of Tokyo-based Komatsu Ltd regional subsidiary Komatsu America Corp.

LP GAS
WHAT IS LP GAS?... Liquefied petroleum gas (also called LPG, GPL, LP Gas, or autogas) is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel in forklifts and vehicles, and increasingly replacing chlorofluorocarbons as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant to reduce damage to the ozone layer. This gas is flammable. Varieties of LP gas bought and sold include mixes that are primarily propane, mixes that are primarily butane, and the more common, mixes including both propane (60%) and butane (40%), depending on the season %u2013 in winter more propane, in summer more butane. Propylene and butylenes are usually also present in small concentration. A powerful odorant, ethanethiol, is added so that leaks can be detected easily. In the United States, thiophene or amyl mercaptan are also approved odorants. LP gas is a low carbon emitting hydrocarbon fuel available in rural areas, emitting 19 percent less CO2 per kWh than oil, 30 percent less than coal and more than 50 percent less than coal-generated electricity distributed via the grid. Being a mix of propane and butane, LP gas emits less carbon per joule than butane but more carbon per joule than propane.
